The George C. Marshall Papers

AT the end of the Staff College year in June 1908, Marshall was one of five graduates selected unanimously by the senior instructors to remain with the school as teachers for the coming year. The other four were captains, the most junior of whom was nearly five hundred files ahead of Marshall in rank. Major Morrison told the army adjutant general: “Lieutenant Marshall will be used as an assistant instructor in the Engineering Department and Military Art Department. He is an exceptionally capable man and will be very valuable to both the departments, and his services are greatly needed.” (Morrison to TAG, July 1, 1908, NA/RG 94 [Leavenworth].) ☆
