Novelist and educator. Married Harriet Emery (1894). Educated at Harvard, Herrick taught rhetoric and English at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1890 to 1893 and then at the University of Chicago from 1905-1923. While committed to his academic work, Herrick was also a successful novelist whose books include The Gospel of Freedom (1898); The Common Lot (1904); Memoirs of an American Citizen (1905); One Woman's Life (1913); The World Decision (1916); and Homely Lilla (1923). Herrick was appointed government secretary of the Virgin Islands in 1935.
