Updegraff, Laurence Vale (1884-1961)

Newspaper editor. A graduate of Yale, Updegraff came to New York City where he became a night librarian at the New York Times. Soon after he was promoted to editor of the Letters to the Editor column on the editorial page. In 1919 he became copy editor of the Times' Sunday Edition where he served until 1935, when he became head of the Sunday section copy desk. He became an assistant to the Sunday Editor in 1942 where he remained until his retirement in 1958.
