I find myself to Come under the Genl Order of 18th Inst. I never should have presum'd to Claim the Rank of Captain, without an Appointment or Commission, had I not been Arrang'd as one. Also order'd to take that Rank at Chesterfield Court House, In Virginia, by Colonel William Davies, last August. It is verry far from my principal to Claim Rank of an Officer who I know myself Inferior to. If I cannot be allow'd to Rank agreeable to the above mention'd Arrangement which I can prove to be just, I would begg leave to Resign, which may prevent further Dissatisfaction among the Officers, who think themselves Injur'd. I am Sir,
Your most obedt Servt
