The Papers of General Nathanael Greene

To Colonel Isaac Shelby

Sir

The enemy are advanceing into the Country and are now as high up the Catawba as Beatty's Ford. They appeare determined to push forward and penetrate through this State. I wish you could bring 1000 of the Volunteer Militia engaged to serve a month from the time they join at Head Quarters to reinforce us. This force will enable us to push the enemy. I have wrote Colonel Campbell on the subject. I beg you will join me as soon as possible with your troops. I have this moment heard of the surprise of George Town one of the Enemy's out posts by Lt Col Lee with his Legion. I am with great respect

Your Most Obedt

N Greene
