The Papers of General Nathanael Greene

To General John Butler

Dear Sir

Your letter of the 5th Inst. I have recieved. By the latest intelligence the enemy must be crossing the Yadkin at Shallow Ford. I beg you will immediately order the Militia of your district to assemble as early as possible at Guilford Court House with six days provision and all the Arms and ammunition they have. I shall be at that place. They must march by night and by day. No time is to be lost as the enemy move with rapidity. Moments are precious. I am Dr Sir

Your Humble Servt
